DAY 66 - NETWORKING MATTERS – PART I

I hope you’re following along as we countdown the final 100 days of 2022 - you can join us anytime. Learn more about the program HERE.

I’ve heard from a number of people in the last couple of weeks, talking about how invaluable their network is.  They are tapping their networks to find new jobs, to make introductions for others to expand their businesses, and for emotional support during tough times.  So, for the next couple of days, we’re going to focus on how to work on creating an incredible network of people.

There are people who are masterful at networking.  My friend Kelly, whom I had the privilege of working with, is someone I would call a master networker!  Not only does he have an incredible network of people he has worked beside and done business with, but those people also admire and respect him. I’m one of them!

What makes Kelly masterful at networking?  Using him as a great example, here are a few things I’ve observed and yes, modeled:

  • The types of businesses in the network.   While it might seem odd to add people in areas of business far outside your world, including people with diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, broaden and expand your relationships.  Kelly surrounds himself with skilled businesspeople in all areas of business, not just the ones that compliment his business.

  • Attract great people.  I’ve had the privilege of being introduced to many, many people in this network and they are all the same – kind, giving, respectful, and generous with their time.  That’s key.  Encircle yourself with people who share the same traits you bring to the table.

  • Be solution oriented.  While networks are designed to help and support us personally and professionally, masterful networkers understand the incredible value of being able to help solve challenges for others as much as for themselves.  For example, if a person you know is in a bind because they need to find a new Director of IT, being able to provide that person with names of candidates you would highly recommend solves their issue.  Connecting the dots for others!

  • Emulate care.  Without a doubt, I know Kelly’s network is built on a foundation of care.  He values the people he knows, the talents they bring, and the contributions they all make to each other.  He cares for the people who surround him.

  • It’s not about the size, it’s the quality.  This is one of those instances where the numbers are not nearly as important as the quality of relationships.  It’s far more important to have a manageable number of connections you can check in on and support on a regular basis.  While there is no perfect number, I would recommend looking at the network you currently have and seeing when it is the last time you checked on that individual or heard from them.  Perhaps a little more attention is needed, or you’ve outgrown that person.  Regardless of why make sure the people you have in your network add value to you and you to them.

Pull up your network today and start evaluating how they fit into your world.  If you haven’t spent time reaching out lately, do so with at least 5 people and see what happens!
