DAY 9 - THERE’S ONLY ONE OF YOU

I hope you’re following along as we countdown the final 100 days of 2022 - you can join us anytime. Learn more about the program HERE.

What is it that makes us compare ourselves to others?  I don’t know anyone who doesn’t do it.  Some more than others.  But really, why do we do it?  To make ourselves feel better because we are in a better situation than someone else.  Or do we belittle ourselves when we don’t feel that we measure up?  We feel envy or jealousy if someone “seems” to be in a better position than us.  Or even worse, we tell ourselves we’re superior to them.

From the clothes we wear, our job titles, our zip code, the car we drive, the people we know, our waist size, and even our wrinkles…we compare.  We look at others and think about how we measure up.  While most people won’t admit to it, let’s be honest.  It happens.

Like anything we’d like to change, admitting it is the first step.  Recognizing that this behavior doesn’t benefit anyone, not ourselves and not the person we’re comparing ourselves to.  So how do we change it?

First, we need to love ourselves the way we are.  We are all uniquely different with so many gifts and talents.  No two people are exactly the same.  And thank heavens for that.  Imagine how boring life would be if we all were just one homogenized group with no differences.

Second, instead of comparing ourselves to someone, think of one thing you see in them that makes them wonderfully different.  Lean into the gifts that they might be able to offer the world.

Lastly, imagine what things would be like if the behavior of loving and appreciating our differences, caught on.  Just imagine...
