There is an abundance of advice for this time of year for those who are looking to make resolutions and changes to their life. And quite a bit of it is good. But if you’re looking to set goals for the New Year I would encourage you to evaluate and plan. Such as setting specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals for different areas of your life, creating a plan to achieve those goals, identifying and overcoming limiting beliefs, focusing on self-care and self-improvement, developing a positive mindset, and creating a support system of friends, family, and professionals. I would also encourage you to reflect on your past experiences and lessons learned and think about how you can apply them to the present and future.
Here are some tips on how to set SMART goals:
Specific: Be clear and specific about what you want to achieve. Instead of saying "I want to be healthier," say "I want to lose 20 pounds in the next 6 months."
Measurable: Make sure your goal can be quantified so you can track your progress. For example, "I want to increase my savings by $500 per month" is measurable.
Attainable: Set a goal that is challenging but realistic. Don't set yourself up for failure by setting a goal that is impossible to achieve.
Relevant: Make sure your goal is relevant to your overall life or career objectives. For example, "I want to learn Spanish" is relevant if you plan to work in a Spanish-speaking country.
Time-bound: Set a deadline for achieving your goal. This creates a sense of urgency and motivation to take action.
Additionally, setting a goal, it's important to have a plan and take action towards achieving it, regularly review and adjust the plan if needed, be accountable, and reward yourself when you achieve the goal.
