What season are you in?

The idea of being in different seasons of life has become a very mainstream concept.  It wasn’t until recently that I put any thought into what it means.  I kind of like the analogy.  The idea of seasons in life dates back to biblical times, a way of representing a person’s focus and needs to be based on where they were in their lives.

Spring – this was the beginning, starting with birth and going into the mid-twenties.  It represented a time of growth, learning, and discovery.  It was considered time to focus on yourself and determine who you wanted to be.  An acceptable time for selfish thinking.

Summer – this shift to summer was meant to be a time of defining purpose – getting married, developing a profession, having a family, and leaning into the joys of life.  It was a time to run and play hard – produce, create, and see what you were capable of.  It was the time to create the framework of your legacy.

Fall or autumn – was a time with a different tone.  This third season represented a period of questioning, contemplation, and reflection.  It was meant for you to consider how well you had done in your life, relative to your desired goals.  Based on how well you’d done in life so far, it could be accompanied with some self-doubt.  It also meant that there was still time to pivot, if necessary.  But there was no time to waste.  On the positive side of fall, if you had done well, this was meant to be the time to reap the rewards for your effort and hard work.  You were also to consider teaching and mentoring, drawing from your experiences to help others in the earlier seasons.

Winter – and finally the last season was meant to be a time of rest.  It’s hard for some people to move into this season of life as it means slowing down.  Others count the number of days until they can.  It truly is all about perspective.  It’s important to remember that the permission to slow down is not giving up.  It’s moving to a time when we can decide for ourselves what we do with our days, how we continue to grow as a person, and the effort we put into being intentional in our relationships.

Each season of life has beauty and opportunity.  We decide for ourselves how we view it and what we do to make the most of the time we’re in.  As we approach another new year, look at the season you’re in and decide how you will make it the best possible time you can.
