DAY 22 - YOU MIGHT JUST BE SURPRISED

My husband and I support the Food Bank of the Rockies, here in Denver. They are a wonderful organization that provides thousands of meals for families. Early November I received an email from the food bank inviting us to sign up for the “Donor’s Volunteer Day.” If you were a donor, this day was set aside for you to come in and help sort essentials for families in time for Thanksgiving distribution. There was a limited amount of time slots available. I quickly grabbed a spot for 7 of us – which included my 3 grandsons – the oldest is 15 and the twins who are 13. You never know how teens will respond to getting up early on a Saturday morning to volunteer, especially when it wasn’t their idea.
The four-hour shift went by in a flash. With the exception of one 15-minute break mid-way through, we all hustled to empty and separate countless pallets of food and supplies. The boys never complained for a moment and their efforts helped our whole crew of 20 volunteers sorts over 26,000 pounds of food, toiletries, and baby supplies. As we wrapped up our shift and went to gather our coats, all 3 boys asked if we can please sign up again.
While I was incredibly proud that they asked to come back (and we will), what made me even prouder was hearing the boy’s conversation as we walked out. “I really hope that we were able to help people have a little better Thanksgiving.” “Yeah,” this was so cool.”
