how to lead employees

In our seventh segment of the Learning to Lead series, we want to speak to the traits necessary to rally your team forward.

When you strive to be a great leader, recognize the responsibility you accept.  It’s so much more than a title or a role, it’s recognizing how you fit into the whole equation.  You may be the leader of an organization because you are responsible for the company’s overall success, but you are not the center of it.  Your people are.  When your team knows the vital role they play and are confident they are being effectively led, they will show up!

Leaders need followers to carry out the company’s expectations.  Your team wants to know they belong to something special; they want to understand the leader’s vision.  Great leaders translate their vision into a reality so clear and so palpable that it is without question the direction the team needs to go.

People follow leaders they respect.  The ability to own their mistakes, come from a place of humility, be trusted, always operate with integrity, follow through on commitments, communicate, and show sincerity and gratitude for their teams…those are traits people desire in their leaders.

I’ve worked at a company where there were very ineffective leaders.  People at an executive level who were more concerned with their position, title, and how to elevate themselves, instead of focusing on elevating their team.  Additionally, when things didn’t go well for them, they were quick to blame, deflect, and accuse others of not supporting them.  Sadly, there was truth in that others did not want to support them.  Why, because they focused on self-aggrandizing.  Their team’s best interests were an afterthought.  Sadly, they had very high turnover, little respect from their peers, and even less respect from people on their teams.

As we’ve noted before, John Maxwell says it perfectly, “people don’t leave companies, they leave people.”
