how to become a better leader

Over the next several days, we’ll be presenting a multi-part series called Learning to Lead.  Leadership development is truly my passion and I love working with business and community leaders.  I spent more than 30 years of my career leading large teams.  It was equally as challenging as it was rewarding.  I strived to be the best leader I could be, and often times it was not easy.  It takes a commitment of time and effort to continuously learn how to lead at a higher level.  But when you are able to start mastering and applying leadership skills, and you see the profound impact it can have on the people you lead, there’s nothing like it!

As we work through this series, you will see that I don’t commonly refer to managing.  To me there is a distinct difference between managing and leading:

  • Managers provide direction; Leaders ask questions.

  • Managers tell you how to do something; Leaders show you how to do it.

  • Managers monitor people’s activities; Leaders check in to see how people are doing.

  • Managers step into the spotlight to accept a team’s praise; Leaders step into the shadow so the team is praised.

  • When things are challenging, a Manager uses their authority to direct; a Leader walks people through challenges and motivates their direction.

We all have the ability to become leaders, but it’s a choice.  You don’t have to have a special title or position to be a leader, you only have to be willing to learn how to lead people and do it with a wholehearted approach.  Leading people becomes all about them, not you.

Kobe Bryant said it best, “I thought being a leader was passing the ball when the guy was open.  Leadership is making the guys want to be better players.”

We hope you’ll take part in this Learning to Lead series.  We’d love to hear from you!
