Take Control of Your Story: The Power of Moving Past Setbacks

At any given moment you have the power to say: this is not how the story is going to end.
— Christine Mason Miller

Setbacks are part of life.  It’s something we universally share as humans.  Whether it’s the loss of a job, betrayal by a loved one or colleague, divorce, family challenges, or rejection, setbacks happen.  What we don’t all commonly share is how we handle the comeback.

Rebounding from a setback, especially one that really hurts us, is difficult.  It would be easy to say, “well just don’t let it bother you.”  Yeah…but for the person feeling hurt, that’s not fair.   We are allowed to feel hurt, angry, and even betrayed.  And while there’s no perfect timeframe to get over the setback, it is really critical to remember that how we feel in the moment is temporary.  Those emotions are a temporary state; the further we move away from the feelings, the faster we can step forward.  We have to be steadfast in not allowing it to define our future.

I think one of the most empowering statements for moving past a setback is encapsulated in today’s quote – “this is not how the story is going to end.”  We are the author of our narrative; a story where we are the star, the main character, and the survivor.  We are filled with talent, gifts, and capabilities that may be temporarily neutralized by someone or something, but that setback is only a moment in time.  We might not be able to control the challenges we face, but we can certainly control the impact it has on us.  We are the author and we control the story!
