creating memories

We’re rounding the bend to the holidays and the end of the year.  It always conjures up excitement, anticipation, and for me, the longing that the time go slowly for the next several days so I can savor moments with my family.

Most families have traditions they repeat and look forward to each year.  We’re no different.  One of our traditions takes place at our oldest daughter’s home on Christmas Eve.  With her, her husband and three teen boys, we all do a gingerbread house decorating contest.  There are eight of us total so four teams.  After dinner and exchanging secret Santa gifts, the building ensues.  I can safely say that while none of us will ever win an award for being the best gingerbread house architect, it is a messy, noisy, crazy, funny, and chaotic contest that always ends with a LOT of laughing.

Before you know it, these three wonderful teenage boys will be out of their house and starting their lives. Our youngest daughter who is graduating from college this June will soon be completely engulfed in graduate school and then into her destined career.  Christmas Eve’s may look different in the years to come, but I’m pretty confident that there are family traditions still ahead of us that will serve up even more laughs and hugs.

I urge you not to let this holiday pass without building on or creating new memories with your family.  There’s nothing more important than time together!
