Mentorship

Mentorship is like a lending library; you leave something and you take something.

I’m sure you’re familiar with the concept of a lending library.  Someone in your community builds a foundation and structure, like a small house, where neighbors can bring books they’ve read and in exchange, they take a book home on loan.  As people contribute and pay it forward, the resource grows.  That to me is the essence of mentorship.

You can be a mentor.  Mentors need not be of a certain age, status, economic standing, education, or any other qualification.  The key requirements are an open heart and a willingness to share what you know with someone who wants to learn.

You can be a mentee.  The most important elements of being a mentee is the willingness to learn, to be vulnerable and honest on what you don’t know, and accept candid feedback.

If one of your goals is to advance your career, further build your business, or even branch out into a new line of work – finding a mentor can be life changing.  Meeting with someone on a regular basis to discuss your goals and progress (or lack of progress) is a powerful accountability check-in.  A great mentor will be a cheerleader on your path; they will also call you out on your “stuff” when excuses prevent you from making steps toward your goals.  Mentors, who have taken the same direction themselves at one time, can provide guidance on the pitfalls that might be ahead and even counsel you on the issues to watch for.  If you don’t have a mentor, find one!  Ask someone to mentor you and what it would mean to you to have their help.  Most people will be honored to accompany you on your journey.

For those of you who have a mentor, it’s time to balance things out and give back.  Become a mentor to someone.  There are so many people who would love to spend a little time with you each month and look to you for advice.  Share your passions, wisdom, and experience with someone who needs a guiding hand.  Being a mentor is one of the most rewarding experiences and relationships you’ll have.
